Learn moreThere's no shortage of driveway companies in Liverpool, and most homeowners only have a driveway laid once or twice in their lives — so it's hard to know what a good job looks like before you've paid for one. The surface you see on day one is the easy part. Whether a drive is still flat, draining properly and free of weeds and sunken patches in a few years depends almost entirely on the groundwork underneath it: how deep the ground was dug out, how well the sub-base was compacted, and which way the water is meant to run.
Liverpool makes that groundwork matter more than in many places. Within a few miles you go from tight Victorian and Georgian terraces with narrow frontages, to post-war semis, to modern estates with wide drives, and the ground changes too — sandstone in parts of the city, heavier clay inland, and sandy, fast-draining ground out towards Crosby, Formby and the Sefton coast. A driveway installer who uses the same depth and the same surface on every job is guessing.
Block paving is still the most popular choice on Liverpool's semis and estate houses because damaged blocks can be lifted and replaced individually. Resin-bound surfacing is permeable, so it helps keep a front-garden driveway within the permitted-development drainage rules, and it suits period terraces and conservation-area streets where plain tarmac can look out of place. Tarmac is a practical, hard-wearing option for larger or longer drives. Gravel is the simplest permeable surface where a loose finish is acceptable, and pattern-imprinted concrete gives a single solid slab with a decorative finish.
We'll tell you honestly which one suits your property, your ground and how you use the drive — including when the cheaper option is the right one.

Driveways across Merseyside
Get more than one quote, make sure each installer has surveyed the drive in person, and compare itemised quotes rather than just the total. Ask how deep they will dig, what the sub-base will be, where the water will drain to, and whether the work needs planning permission. A good installer will be happy to answer all of that before you commit.
Yes. We lay and resurface driveways across Liverpool and Merseyside — including Bootle, Crosby, Formby, Southport, Maghull, Kirkby, Huyton, St Helens, Birkenhead and the Wirral, Widnes and Runcorn. Our areas page lists every town we cover.
In England, a new or replacement hard surface over 5 square metres at the front of a house generally needs planning permission unless it is permeable or drains to a permeable area such as a lawn or border. Conservation areas and listed buildings can have extra rules, so it's worth checking with Liverpool City Council (or your own local council) for your property.
On a narrow terraced frontage, resin-bound surfacing and permeable block paving are usually the strongest options: both look neat in a small space and both are permeable, which helps with the drainage rules. We'll recommend what suits your specific frontage at the free survey.
A dropped kerb (vehicle crossover) is on the public highway, so it needs permission from your local council's highways team and is normally installed to the council's specification. It's a separate application from the driveway itself. Our dropped kerbs guide explains how it works in Liverpool.
